Learn About - Bearded Dragons!
Here are some cool and fun facts about bearded dragons:
They're native to Australia – Bearded dragons (especially the central bearded dragon, Pogona vitticeps) are found in arid, desert, and semi-arid regions of Australia.
They have a “beard” – The name comes from the expandable throat pouch that turns black when they're threatened, excited, or trying to assert dominance.
They wave and bob their heads – These gestures are part of their social communication. Waving often shows submission, while head bobbing can signal dominance or mating interest.
They can change color – Some bearded dragons can slightly change their skin color to regulate body temperature or express mood.
They’re omnivores – They eat a mix of insects (like crickets and roaches) and plant matter (like leafy greens and fruits).
They need UVB light – In captivity, they require UVB lighting to synthesize vitamin D3 and absorb calcium properly.
They’re surprisingly social – While not cuddly, they often become very accustomed to human interaction and can recognize their owners.
They can “brumate” – Similar to hibernation, they can go into a period of dormancy during cooler months, even in captivity.
They’re great climbers – Despite being terrestrial, they love to climb rocks and branches.
They live 8–12 years in captivity – With proper care, they can live a long and healthy life.
